Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL â Ryan Hankins launched a two-run homer over the left-centerfield wall in the bottom of the eighth to give the Barons a come-from-behind 3-2 victory in the series opener versus the Mobile BayBears in front of 1,349 fans on Monday evening.
Mobile took an early 2-0 lead against Barons starter Corwin Malone after Khalil Greene doubled home a run in the top of the first and Jake Gautreau singled in a tally in the third.
The Barons would mount a comeback, however, and started with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Guillermo Reyes singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third when Danny Sandoval reached on an error and later scored on a RBI single off the bat of Juan Piniella.
The score stayed 2-1 until the bottom of the eighth when Hankins struck the big blow. Danny Sandoval singled and was sacrificed to second by Piniella before Hankins sent the 2-0 offering from BayBears reliever Bryan Gaal deep over the left-centerfield wall.
Barons reliever Enemencio Pacheco (1-0) picked up his first Double-A victory after throwing 3.0 scoreless innings and Gaal (0-3) took the loss after giving the Hankins blast. Jake Meyer registered his first save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth.
The Barons continue the series with Mobile tomorrow night at 7:00 with game two of the four-game series. Birmingham sends out RHP Brian West (0-0, 11.25) to face BayBears RHP Brad Baker (0-2, 10.80).
