Barnstormers Win Inaugural Community Service Award
October 15, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The baseball organizations of the Atlantic League all pride themselves on strong community outreach programs and events. Today, Atlantic League President Rick White announced that the Lancaster Barnstormers will be honored with the 2015 Atlantic League Community Service Award, in the inaugural season of the distinction.
Manager Butch Hobson, the Barnstormers players and the Barnstormers' legendary mascot, Cylo, are beloved in Lancaster County and have long been heralded for their work within the community, yet the Lancaster organization has not yet been recognized for their community service efforts.
Following the 2014 season, the owners of the Barnstormers challenged everyone in the organization to think beyond baseball. The goal was to transform Clipper Magazine Stadium to the destination where friends meet, events are held, and special moments happen on a daily basis. Managing Partner Rob Liss' message was to turn Clipper Magazine Stadium to Lancaster's true "Community Center" or "Town Hall".
Public Relations Coordinator, Holly Love, Barnstormers star reliever and Manheim Township native, Pete Andrelczyk, and the Barnstormers "Anonymous" Cylo performers took to the streets of Lancaster County with a mission. Pete, Cylo and Holly visited just about every school district in Lancaster County. They were on hand for Penn Manor "Shine Time" assemblies or School District of Lancaster reading activities and even taught a lesson or two on baseball and physics for Reynolds Middle School.
2015 was a record year for the Barnstormers' "Fundraising Initiatives". Vice President Tony DeMarco's nationally recognized "School Spirit Program" raised funds for important programs in 17 School Districts in Lancaster County. Engle Printing & Publishing sponsors these games and provides a complimentary ticket to every student in each district. Students encourage parents, family and friends to buy tickets. For every ticket sold $4 is remitted to the program of the district's choice.
In the past 12 months Clipper Magazine Stadium hosted a remarkable number of non-profit events including:
- The Project for the Needy feeding 1500 Lancaster families on Christmas Eve
- The Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis
- Relay for Life Night with Phillies Catcher and Cancer Survivor, Darren Daulton
- The "Go Beyond Initiative" which fed 200,000 people in drought stricken areas around the world, with Yankees Legend, Bobby Richardson
- The Recovery Walk for over 500 members of the 12 Step Community with speaker Doc Gooden, former Cy Young Award Winner of the New York Mets
Just two weeks ago, the Walk to End Alzheimer's was held at Clipper Magazine Stadium. An all-time record total of $198,336 was raised. Lancaster Barnstormers' Game Presentation Manager Alex Einhorn hosted this special day. "We are not just a facility... the events held at the stadium have personal connections" said Einhorn, whose grandfather suffered with Alzheimer's, "Putting on a great event with those connections makes our work worth it"!
