Lancaster Stormers News Release
Prior to the start of Thursday evening's game between the Lancaster Barnstormers and Long Island Ducks, the two teams agreed to shorten it to seven innings due to impending rains.
Either the Barnstormers needed to trim another inning, or the rain needed to arrive sooner.
Long Island rallied for four two-out runs in the top of the seventh to topple the Barnstormers, 6-5, in the rubber game of a three-game series on Thursday evening.
Closer Scott Shuman (0-1) took a 5-2 lead into the inning but allowed a leadoff single to Hector Sanchez. The right-hander recovered to strike out Daniel Fields for the first out, but he walked Jesse Berardi after a lengthy battle. Johnni Turbo grounded into a 5-4 force out with a grounder smothered by Nick Shumpert, bringing the Barnstormers to within one out of the conclusion.
However, that final out would not come. Steve Lombardozzi walked to load the bases. L.J. Mazzilli poked a single into right to score two, and Lomardozzi raced home as well when the ball bounced away from Caleb Gindl for an error. Pinch hitter Ben Farias rolled a single into left to score the lead run.
Gindl singled with one out in the bottom of the inning, but pinch runner Devon Torrence was thrown out stealing to end the game as Michael Tonkin picked up his sixth save.
The Barnstormers had raced out to a 5-1 lead through five innings. Kelly Dugan doubled home two runs off Joe Iorio in the fourth to give the Barnstormers their first advantage. In the fifth, Cleuluis Rondon drew a walk and took second on a single by Shumpert. Gindl knocked a base hit into right to load the bases. Melvin Mercedes drove in two with the third straight single for a 4-1 edge. Alejandro De Aza tacked on a single up the middle for a 5-1 lead. De Aza was cut down on a steal attempt, and Mercedes was thrown out trying to score on a fourth ball to Dugan which flew back to Sanchez off the backstop.
Lancaster starter Cody Boydstun limited the Ducks to four singles and an unearned run over the first five innings. He departed after yielding a pair of singles, one off his hand, to start the sixth. Lombardozzi scored when pinch hitter Clint Freeman rolled an infield single up the first baseline.
Danny Barnes (1-0) pitched a perfect sixth inning to earn the win.
Lancaster visits York on Friday night at 6:30. Augie Sylk (1-0) will take the hill for the Barnstormers against right-hander Jake Welch. Fans may watch the game on the Barnstormers' YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:25.
NOTES: Gindl hit safely for the 10th consecutive game, the longest streak by a Barnstormer this season...De Aza is 12-for-22 against Long Island...Boydstun has allowed only one earned run in 8 2/3 innings of work as a Barnstormer...He threw only 12 balls in the first five innings...Dugan has 23 RBI in his last 24 games.
