Lancaster Stormers News Release

Augie Sylk's first three meetings with the Lexington Legends on the season did not go well for the young lefty.

Wednesday night, he seemed to find the secret.

Sylk (3-4) carried a shutout into the sixth, and his bullpen held on for a 6-3 victory over the Legends in the middle game of a three-game series. With the win, the Barnstormers remained tied for first place in the North with Southern Maryland. The Blue Crabs defeated West Virginia, 7-5.

Over the first five innings, Sylk checked Lexington on four hits and a pair of first inning walks. He struck out slugger Keon Barnum to open the sixth before Michael Choice ruined the shutout with a homer onto the picnic deck in right. He could not finish the inning, issuing two more walks and an RBI double to Jose Briceno around a flyout by Sam Claycamp. A third run scored when Ben Aklinski greeted reliever Cameron Gann with a single up the middle.

Kelly Dugan staked the Barnstormers to a lead with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third off Shawn Blackwell (5-7), a blow that extended the first baseman's RBI streak to eight games. Lancaster would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, a messy inning in the field for Lexington. Alejandro De Aza led off with a single. One out later, he was able to advance to second as Briceno tried to pick him off first base, seemingly surprising Choice and missing the target. De Aza took third as Trayvon Robinson grounded out. Aklinski made a low short throw on a Devon Torrence grounder for an error, allowing De Aza to score. Torrence eventually came home on a single up the middle by Anderson De La Rosa.

Robinson singled home Blake Allemand in the bottom of the sixth for the 6-3 lead.

Cameron Gann yielded two walks and a single to start the seventh. With the tying runs on base, the right-hander was able to squirm out of the inning. Roberto Baldoquin flied to shallow right. Briceno fouled out to first, and Claycamp was retired on a deep fly out to right center.

Neither side produced another baserunner. Gabriel Moya worked the eighth for the Barnstormers, striking out two. Scott Shuman matched the effort in the ninth, earning his 14th save.

The Barnstormers close out the season series with Lexington on Thursday evening. Lancaster will send Dominic DiSabatino (9-3) to the mound against Davis Feldman (0-0). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube broadcast, beginning at 6:25.

NOTES: Dugan also extended his hitting streak to 10 games, tied for the second longest on the team this season...Allemand has hit safely in six in a row...Nick Shumpert and Torrence combined to steal three bases in the game...Moya has retired 10 straight batters, seven on strikes...Shuman has allowed one earned run in his last 15 innings.
