Barnstormers Sweep Rain-Soaked Pair

June 3, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

At times, it did not seem that the Lancaster Barnstormers and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs would get one official game in on Saturday night.

To the benefit of the Lancaster Barnstormers, they played long enough to record two decisions.

Jonathan Albaladejo fired a complete game, seven-hit shutout in the opener, and the Barnstormers built an early lead in the rain-shortened nightcap for a 1-0 and 4-1 doubleheader sweep of the Blue Crabs at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

With the sweep, the Barnstormers improved to 24-9 on the season and jumped three games ahead of the Sugar Land Skeeters in the Freedom Division.

Albaladejo (4-2) went the distance, scattering seven singles. He was only supported by a Joey Terdoslavich homer to right in the bottom of the second inning.

Otherwise, the right-hander's defense got him out of some tight scrapes. In the top of the first, Teodoro Martinez and Edwin Garcia opened with base hits to put runners at first and third with no outs. Ryan Strausborger hit a one-hopper to the left of third baseman Tyler Bortnick, who made the decision to fire home and cut down Martinez. Albaladejo escaped the inning from there.

In the seventh, the lead was seriously tested. Cory Vaughn led off with a line drive single to left. The Blue Crabs executed a perfect bunt-and-run to get Vaughn to third. Johnny Bladel was summoned to bat for catcher Jose Gonzalez. Bladel stroked a liner to left. Trayvon Robinson gloved the ball and fired a perfect one-hop strike home to nail Vaughn and finish the game.

Rain fell during the third and fourth innings of the contest but never got to the point where the umpiring crew signaled for play to be halted.

The nightcap got off to a very different beginning. Just five pitches in, umpires halted play with Darian Sandford at first and a 1-0 count on Rico Noel.

Play resumed 52 minutes later, following a rant by Southern Maryland manager James Frisbie and several discussions with the umpires and Crabs' hitting coach Kash Beauchamp and starting pitcher David Wayne Russo, play resumed.

Noel eventually walked. He and Sandford pulled off a double steal. Following a strikeout, Ryan Casteel smoked a grounder through the legs of third baseman Frank Martinez, scoring both runners.

Lancaster got to Russo again in the second. Nate Coronado, in his first at bat since coming from the New York Yankees organization, doubled to right. Vladimir Frias singled him to third and moved up on a wild pitch. Carlos Garcia singled to left center, driving in both.

Barnstormers manager Ross Peeples used four pitchers to work game two. John Anderson allowed a leadoff single to Bladel before retiring six in a row. Huascar Brazoban (1-0) pitched hitless baseball through the third and fourth innings.

In the fifth, the Blue Crabs scraped together their only run of the night. Garrett Granitz hit Vaughn with a 1-2 pitch leading off the inning. After a force out at second, Angelys Nina doubled inside the third base bag, pushing Austin Green to third. Bladel knocked the run home with a sacrifice fly to center. Edwin Garcia singled to right with Nina holding at third. Granitz polished off the inning by retiring Teodoro Martinez on a fly ball to right.

Any additional chance that Southern Maryland had to rally was cut short as heavy rains hit the ballpark with one out and a runner at first in the bottom of the sixth. The game was officially called 30 minutes later.

Lancaster wraps up the series on Sunday afternoon with a battle of aces. Nate Reed (5-0) takes the hill for the Barnstormers against veteran right-hander Daryl Thompson (2-2). Fans may tune into the game on Blue Ridge Cable 11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 1:00.

NOTES: The Barnstormers are now 6-2 against Southern Maryland on the year and 14-5 at Clipper Magazine Stadium...For the second time this week, Lancaster batted as the road team in a game in Lancaster as the second game was a makeup from May 27 at Southern Maryland...The Barnstormers are 8-1 in planned seven-inning games this season...Frias has seven hits in his last nine at bats and is up to .344 on the season.
