Barnstormers Sink Pirates' Ship

The Barnstormers started the game by kicking off. The Barnstormers defense made a kickoff return tackle in the end zone to put an early point on the board. Iowa's defense came out in full effect in the first quarter. Defensive Back JR Stevens intercepted Massachusetts in the end zone to give the possession back to Iowa. After a failed scoring attempt by the Barnstormers the Pirates received the ball back. They had to settle for a field goal making the score 1-3 with 3:30 left in the first quarter.

Barnstormers Defensive Back Adihia Bell wanted in on the defensive action in the second quarter making a leaping interception and running it back to past half field mark putting the Barnstormers in scoring position with 8:00 minutes left in the second quarter. Barnstormers Quarterback Darius-James Peterson dove into the endzone to score a touchdown putting the Barnstormers on top 8-3 with 3:09 left in the second quarter. The Pirates answered back with a touchdown of their own adding six points to the board. After a failed two-point conversion the score remained 8-9 with the Barnstormers trailing by one up until the last second of the second quarter. With one second left, the Pirates scored a field goal to make the score 8-12 going into halftime.

The Barnstormers chose to defer to start the half. After both teams battled back and forth, Running Back Antonio Wimbush found the end zone to put the Barnstormers up 15-12 with 9:43 left in the third. The scoring ran dry for Iowa. Massachusetts went on to score two consecutive touchdowns putting them ahead 15-26 going into the fourth quarter.

The Barnstormers offense was not ready to back down yet. RB Wimbush snuck his way past multiple Pirate defenders in the end zone to make the score 22-26 with 14:43 left in the fourth quarter. Barnstormers continued to take the wind out of the Pirates' sails when Defensive Back Titus Howard made a massive fumble recovery late in the fourth giving the Barnstormers another scoring opportunity. QB Peterson took that opportunity and utilized it to find WR Stuart in the end zone to put the Barnstormers back on top, 28-26 with 9:12 left in the game. From there Iowa never let off the gas pedal. Defensive Back Justic'e King intercepted Massachusetts ball in the end zone giving the Barnstormers yet another chance to score. QB Peterson took the opportunity and dove into the endzone and scored the last and final touchdown of the game solidifying the win, 35-26, over the Massachusetts Pirates.

The Barnstormers will head to Tucson, Arizona next week to take on the Tucson Sugar Skulls for the first time this season. Kickoff is set for 8:05 P.M. CT on Saturday, July 9, at the Tucson Arena.
