
Barnstormers Sign Two Pitchers

Former Florida Marlins reliever Jay Buente headlines a pair of right-handed pitchers that have been signed by the Lancaster Barnstormers for the 2013 season, it was announced today by manager Butch Hobson.
Also inked was Jhonny Montoya, who is coming off a stellar winter in Venezuela.
The signings bring the total number of players under contract to 11.
Buente, 29, signed with the Marlins out of Purdue University in 2006. He reached the Major Leagues on May 27, 2010, making his debut against the Atlanta Braves. He ultimately made 10 appearances in the Majors with the Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays over the next season and a half.
Over his six minor league seasons, Buente has compiled a record of 23-12 in 223 appearances. The 6'2" right-hander has yielded only 334 hits and 153 walks in 379.2 innings of work while striking out 395.
"Buente has great numbers," said Hobson. "He's going to be one of our starters. This guy is pretty good."
Montoya, 26, appeared in 23 games for the Frontier League's Washington Wild Things in 2012, posting a 3-3 record and 3.92 ERA. The right-hander struck out nine in six shutout innings in his first start of the season, May 19 at Evansville, and went on to whiff 66 batters over 62 innings during the season. A native of Venezuela, Montoya was 4-7 with a 3.77 ERA in 20 starts for the Wild Things the previous campaign, authoring 10 quality starts in the process. He will be entering his fourth professional season.
The Caracas native was 6-0 with a 2.78 ERA in 13 appearances for Los Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League. His team fell in seven games in the Venezuelan Championship Series.
"Montoya had a great winter season," said Hobson. "He has a power arm. I want to bring him into Lancaster and see what he can do."
