Iowa Barnstormers News Release
Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Barnstormers improved to 9-4 on the season with a 54-48 victory over the previously undefeated Spokane Shock on Saturday night before a crowd of 8,032 fans at Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Field. With the loss, Spokane falls to 12-1 on the season and brings an end to their 33 game regular season winning streak.
The Barnstormers opened the scoring quickly as QB Brian Villanueva hooked up with WR Dusty Kain for the first of his 5 touchdown passes on the night, giving Iowa a 7-0 lead. Spokane responded on the ensuing drive to tie the game 7-7. However the Barnstormers defense dominated much of the rest of the first half, forcing two turnovers and stopping Spokane twice on downs. The result was a 25-14 halftime lead for Iowa.
The second half scoring opened with a Jeff Glas FG, increasing Iowa's lead to 28-14. Spokane responded, showing why they have been ranked the af2's number one team all season, scoring on their next three possessions, tying the game at 35-35 after three quarters.
On the opening play of the fourth quarter, Spokane attempted an on-side kick. However, the risky play backfired as Iowa's Micah King recoverd the ball and scored on a 10 yard return. Up by seven, the Stormers turned up the heat on defense again as DL Brent Curvey forced a fumble that was recoverd by Iowa's Charles Johnson. Two plays later, Villanueva found Kain in the endzone for the fourth time on the night, giving the Barnstormers a 54-42 lead
Spokane narrowed the lead to 54-48 in the game's final minute but Iowa was able to run out the clock on their final possession of the night. When Villanueva plowed ahead for a 2 yard gain, the Shock could only stand and watch the final seconds tick off the clock resulting in the Iowa victory.
