Barnstormers pummel Bears
June 4, 2006 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers took the Newark Bears to the woodshed Sunday afternoon. Now they need the Bears to become their best friends.
Reggie Taylor launched a first inning grand slam, Jutt Hileman had his biggest day of the season, and five pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as Lancaster leveled Newark, 13-0.
The win, Lancaster?s fifth straight, improved the Barnstormers overall mark to 21-10, keeping the team in first place by at least 1 ? games in front of Atlantic City and at least four ahead of Somerset in the Southern Division. Newark has lost 13 of its last 14 games but the Bears? next 10 games come against the Barnstormers two immediate pursuers, and Lancaster hopes for a turnaround.
Quincy Foster opened the ballgame with a bunt single along the third base line and took second on Jason Bowers? ringing single to center off Pat Daneker (2-2). Hileman was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Taylor gave the Barnstormers the quick 4-0 lead with a liner over the right field wall, his fourth homer of the season.
Travis Hake singled home a run later in the inning, and Hileman tacked on an RBI double before the first out in the second as Lancaster built a 6-0 lead before the offense went into hibernation through the remainder of Daneker?s outing.
The Barnstormers put the game completely out of reach in the sixth. Steve Van Note led off with a double to the base of the right field wall, and Hake walked. Foster singled home a run for a 7-0 edge. David Glick was brought on to face Bowers, who had homered off him in Saturday night?s doubleheader, and got a ground ball. However, shortstop Donaldo Mendez fumbled the hopper to his right and failed to get an out. Hileman and Taylor followed with consecutive doubles for an 11-0 lead. Lance Burkhart later drove in Taylor with a sac fly to make it 12-0. Hileman slugged his third homer of the season in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Andy Zwirchitz (3-3) worked the first five innings for the Barnstormers. He allowed three singles and two walks while fanning six on the afternoon. Zwirchitz survived a scare in the third when Mendez singled to left center leading off, and Liu Rodriguez beat out a dribbler to the right side with two outs. Lipso Nava followed with Newark?s hardest hit ball of the day, a ringing single to center which loaded the bases. With a chance to close the gap, Michael Moore took a rip at the first pitch and popped out to third base to end the inning.
Eric Ackerman, Matt Knox, Scott Patterson and Rob Henkel each threw a scoreless inning facing three batters apiece to close out the series sweep.
