NEWARK, NJ - June 4, 2006 - The Lancaster Barnstormers sent ten batters to the plate en route to a five run first inning to beat the Newark Bears 13-0 Sunday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The shutout marks the first time the Bears have been shutout in back-to-back games since May 30 and 31, 2005.
Center fielder Reggie Taylor hit a grand slam, his fourth home run of the season, and second baseman Travis Hake hit an RBI single to give the Barnstormers a 5-0 lead after the first inning. Lancaster would add to their lead with six runs on four hits, including three doubles in the top of the sixth inning. Left fielder Justin Hileman led the way for the Barnstormers going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI, and Taylor finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI.
Pat Daneker (2-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in five innings, striking out five, while former Bear Andy Zwirchitz (3-3) earned the victory after pitching five scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and striking out six.
For the Bears, left fielder Jose Herrera, and shortstop Donaldo Mendez each had one hit to extend their hitting streaks to six games and eight games respectively.
The Bears will begin a three game road series against the Somerset Patriots beginning Tuesday, June 6 at Commerce Bank Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Joe Gannon (2-0) will make his fifth start of the season for Newark.
