Barnstormers Name Carmelo Velazquez as Special Teams Coordinator

DES MOINES - The Iowa Barnstormers have named Carmelo Velazquez as Special Teams Coordinator and Perimeter Coach, Head Coach Dave Mogensen announced today.
Continuing to re-build for the 2024 season, the Iowa Barnstormers have welcomed Carmelo Velazquez to the coaching staff as Special Teams Coordinator and Perimeter Coach.
"With us having additional openings on the coaching staff, we expected to focus on filling that spot after hiring a DC," said Coach Mogensen. "Luck worked in our favor as we were able to secure the services of one of our DC interview finalists, Carmelo Velazquez."
Coach Velazquez joins the Iowa Barnstormers with a variety of coaching experiences to his name. Most recently, he served as an Assistant Coach for the Carolina Cobras of the NAL where he spent two seasons. With a passion for coaching young athletes, Velazquez currently serves as the Assistant Wide Receivers Coach at Concordia University Wisconsin.
With a unique background in football, Coach Velazquez also brings playing experience to the Barnstormers. After his collegiate career, Velazquez played semi-pro football in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area for several years racking up numerous First Team All-League and MVP honors. Velazquez is also a member of the American Football events team, USA All-Stars where he travels the country competing against the world's best minor league players.
"I am excited to join a team rich in tradition supported by the community," said Coach Velazquez. "It's an honor to be a part of a team with an amazing fan base. You can't mention indoor football without mentioning the Iowa Barnstormers."
Velazquez is joining the Iowa Barnstormers excited to help turn things around after the team's difficult 2023 season. "Special teams is 1/3 of the game and sets the tone for our success as a team on offense and defense. I want our special teams to be in control of our field position which will determine how great we can be on both sides of the ball."
"Carmelo was very impressive in his interviews for our DC job and has such a diverse and interesting football background which gives him a great level of experience to fall back on," said Coach Mogensen. "He has proven to connect greatly with his players and as Special Teams Coordinator has earned a lot of recognition from his peers. He is coming off leading his team, the Carolina Cobras, to back-to-back championship games. That experience will be paramount in our reload for 2024."
