Barnstormers Fall to Fighters in Last Second Touchdown

The Frisco Fighters (6-1) sneak their way past the Iowa Barnstormers (4-4) with a last second touchdown and blocked field goal attempt to come away with the win, 35-43.

The Barnstormers received the opening kickoff and scored on their first drive of the game. Quarterback Daquan Neal avoided Fighters defenders and rushed into the end zone for his tenth rushing touchdown of the season to put the Barnstormers up 7-0 early in the first quarter. The Barnstormers defensive back Kenton Bartlett and linebacker Tony Jones forced a sack for a loss of nine yards for the Fighters offense. The Fighters answered back with a field goal made by kicker Kristov Martinez to put the score at 7-3 with 4:17 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Iowa's offense still had more to give. Neal connected with receiver Carrington Thompson for 29 yards which resulted in a touchdown, 14-3 with 8:53 left in the second quarter. The Fighters fought back to score their first touchdown of the game. Frisco's quarterback Johnathan Bane completed a pass to receiver Demarcus Felton to put the Fighters within five, 14-9 with 3:49 left in the second quarter. Late in the second quarter Neal found wide receiver Daylon Person, which resulted in a touchdown. Rui's PAT was good and the Barnstormers went up 21-10 with 1:52 left in the second quarter. The Barnstormers attempted an onside kick and recovered the ball. A field goal was attempted by Rui but was incomplete, ending the first half  21-17.

The Fighters started with the ball in the second half and scored on the first drive taking the lead for the first time of the game 21-23, PAT was no good. After a couple of strong defensive stops made by the Fighters, Neal responded back with a rushing touchdown, his second of the game. Barnstormers took the lead back 28-23 with 1:55 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Barnstormers fumble giving a scoring opportunity to the Fighters with 11:00 left in the game. Frisco seized the chance and scored on a pass from Bane to receiver Manny Arceneaux to put the score at 28-30 with the Barnstormers trailing. But, the Barnstormers weren't done yet. Neal connects with Person for the second time of the night putting the Barnstormers up, 35-30 with 2:00 remaining in the game. The Fighters found the end zone for a last second touchdown, 35-36, with :03 remaining in the game. Frisco attempted a two point conversion but was broken up by the Barnstormers defense. Iowa had one more chance to score as Rui attempted a 54 yard field goal with :01 left on the clock but was blocked by the Fighters who recovered it in the end zone for a Fighters touchdown, pushing them ahead 35-43.

The Barnstormers are back at Wells Fargo Arena in two weeks, July 24, 2021, to face the Green Bay Blizzard for the second time this season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 pm CST.
