Barnstormers Fall, Repeat Dreams Dashed
September 27, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers hopes to repeat as Atlantic League champions ended in Game Four of the Freedom Division Series on Saturday night as the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs pulled away for a 6-0 shutout victory to clinch the series, three games to one.
Southern Maryland awaits the winner of the Liberty Division series between the Long Island Ducks and the Somerset Patriots which heads to Game Five on Sunday afternoon.
Tim Sexton fired 7 2/3 shutout innings before fading in the eighth. Justin Berg picked up the final four outs.
The duo checked the Barnstormers on eight hits in throwing the second shutout of the series for the Blue Crabs. Lancaster managed one extra base hit on the night, a ground rule double by Mike McDade in the eighth. Two Barnstormers walked and a total of 10 struck out.
Shunsuke Watanabe, making the Game Four start for Lancaster, was in steady trouble but was able to keep his team close.
Southern Maryland broke through for its first run in the second. Reggie Abercrombie led off with a double to left and took third on Jovan Rosa's sinking line drive single, also into left. Watanabe struck out Jamar Walton for the first out. Keith Castillo lifted a pop fly to shallow right which was caught by second baseman Tyler Bortnick, who backpedaled to get there. Third base coach Jeremy Owens sent Abercrombie who scored as Bortnick was unable to put much on the throw home.
Watanabe escaped a similar jam in the third but gave up a two-out run in the fourth. Casey Frawley walked, and Bryant Nelson singled through the right side, chasing him to third. Fred Lewis picked up the run with a single into right center.
Overall, Watanabe yielded seven hits and three walks while striking out four in his five-inning stint.
Pete Andrelczyk kept the Barnstormers within two with a scoreless sixth, but the Blue Crabs pulled away in the seventh.
Mark Lamm walked Zach Wilson and yielded a double by Abercrombie. Rosa struck out, and Walton was intentionally walked to set up a double play. Lamm made the right pitch as Castillo knocked a one-hopper toward Lance Zawadzki at short. The ball hopped higher than expected, and Zawadzki lost control for a split second, resulting in Lancaster only being able to pick up a force out.
Frawley followed with a three-run homer onto the picnic deck in left for the final margin.
