Iowa Barnstormers News Release

DES MOINES - A raucous crowd of 8,712 screaming fans saw the Iowa Barnstormers exact revenge for an opening week defeat as they jumped out to an early lead and never let go in defeating co-Midwest Division leader Louisville Fire 48-39.

The Barnstormers evened their record at 3-3, while the Fire dropped to 4-3 on the season.

Central Iowa native QB Joe Brannen again led the way for the 'Stormers with five touchdown passes and one on the ground. The 'Stormers receiving corps came up big as both Robert Kilow and Errick McCown hit paydirt with two touchdown receptions.

The 'Stormers struck first as Brannen eluded a fierce Fire rush for a four yard touchdown scamper. After a score by the Louisville defense, Brannen connected on touchdown strikes of twelve yards to Tim Dodge and five yards to Kilow at the end of the first quarter to give the 'Stormers a 21-6 edge after the opening quarter.

The Fire were kept in the game by an opportunistic defense that record two interception returns for scores in the first half, which cut the Barnstormers halftime lead to 27-13.

With 42.2 seconds to play, the Fire struck back with a Bassuener scoring strike, but failed to draw even as Barnstormer Terrance Freeney forced an incomplete pass, which left the Barnstormers clinging to a 41-39 lead. Jason Berryman recovered the ensuing onside kick and returned it for a Barnstormers touchdown bringing the score to 48-39.
