Pioneers Get Their Revenge Over The Steamwheelers

(Wilkes-Barre) The Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Pioneers exacted revenge for an opening night loss in Quad City as they steamrolled the Steamwheelers 84-26 in front of 5,324 at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre.

Ryan Vena was named the Schutt Offensive player of the game for the fourth time in as many weeks since his return to the Pioneers with 253 yards passing on 26-33 passing with seven touchdowns. Vena spread the wealth with touchdown passes to four different receivers. Rich Musinski led the way with 9 catches for 89 yards and three touchdowns, while JJ Outlaw added 9 catches for 73 yards and one TD. Geisinger MVP and JLS Ironman of the game Larry Kendrick caught five balls for 71 yards and he recovered his fifth fumble for a touchdown this season. Prince Prempeh, seeing his first action of the year, got in on the fun as well with his first career touchdown catch.

The Pioneers defense put together another impressive effort. ADT defensive player of the game Isaac Hilton set the Pioneers home record for sacks with three in the game. He and Justin Parrish, who finished with five quarterback hurries, harassed and beat up Steamwheelers QB JJ Raterink. The af2 veteran was only able to complete 19 of his 38 passes for 216 yards and four touchdowns and one interception that was returned for a score by Barry Drakeford.

Pioneers started off the game on a roll. Two Ryan Vena touchdown passes were sandwiched around a four and out by the Pioneers defense who made their presence felt on the next drive when Isaac Hilton sacked Steamwheelers QB JJ Raterink forcing a fumble that was recovered by Larry Kendrick for a touchdown. Ryan Vena added another touchdown pass to Larry Kendrick to complete a 28-0 first quarter for the Pioneers who would never look back. A 28-0 fourth quarter was punctuated by Tu Tu Ferguson recovering a ball off the net in the end zone to complete the scoring.

The Pioneers are home again this Friday night against the second place Albany Conquest.
