May 26, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
In his return to professional baseball after eight seasons off, Grant Desme went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run batted in.
However, despite the efforts of the Lancaster DH, the Barnstormers still dropped a 3-2 decision to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Saturday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium.
Desme, 32, flared a single to right in his first at bat, drew a walk in the fourth and singled to lead off the seventh inning. In his final at bat in the eighth inning, the former A's prospect grounded a single up the middle to bring Lancaster within a run.
Otherwise, the Barnstormers offense continued to struggle to produce runs.
Down, 3-1, entering the seventh, Desme and Anderson De La Rosa, who was 4-for-4 singled, but both were left on base. In the eighth, following Desme's two-out RBI single, Blake Gailen sliced a liner to left. Johnny Bladel froze in place before making a last second lunging catch for the third out.
In the ninth, De La Rosa led off with a line drive single into left and moved up on Tyler Bortnick's infield chop. Following a wild pitch that moved De La Rosa to third, Darian Sandford picked up a walk to put the lead run on base. Rico Noel, the league's top hitter, went for Cody Eppley's first pitch, bouncing near the second base bag. It was flagged by shortstop Edwin Garcia. A step and a throw later, and the game was over.
Southern Maryland piled up 11 singles on Lancaster starter Jonathan Albaladejo (3-2). Frank Martinez bounced a single into right field in the second for the first run. The trio of Garcia, Teodoro Martinez and Angelo Songco strung together consecutive base hits in the third and fifth innings for the other two.
Lancaster's first run came on a wild pitch by Blue Crabs starter Joey Wagman in the third inning. Wagman, who got a visit from the trainer two pitches earlier and was struggling with a rain-dampened mound, crumpled to the ground after releasing a pitch that went sideways toward the first base line.
The clubs complete the series on Sunday evening with Nate Reed (4-0) pitching for Lancaster against right-hander Daryl Thompson (2-2). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:15.
NOTES: Ryan Casteel delivered a pinch single in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to eight games...De La Rosa jumped his average to .230 with the four-hit game...Lancaster had four runners thrown out on the bases...The Barnstormers only have two RBI in the last 35 innings...Lancaster pitchers recorded 11 K's and now have 219 in 222 innings.
