Lancaster Stormers News Release
On Tuesday evening, the Barnstormers got their one bad moment out of the way early.
Jake Fox belted a two-run homer in the top of the first inning off Dwayne Pollok. It would be the Somerset Patriots' only highlight.
Lancaster scored 12 unanswered runs to put together their biggest home win of the season, 12-2, over the Patriots at Clipper Magazine Stadium. It was the Barnstormers fourth consecutive win on their current homestand.
Pollok (7-3) worked seven innings, giving up only five hits and the two first inning runs. The right-hander walked one and struck out six. Somerset's only other threat came in the sixth when Luis Montanez singled to the hole at shortstop and scampered to third on Corey Smith's one-out double into the right field corner. Pollok shattered Cory Aldridge's bat on a soft liner to second, and Smith was doubled off to end the inning.
By then, the Barnstormers had the game fairly well in hand. Blake Gailen countered the Fox homer with one of his own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Lancaster would go ahead to stay in the bottom of the second. Austin Gallagher smoked a double into the left field corner, and Matt Spencer followed with a bloop double, also down the left field line, chasing Gallagher to third. Jerry Owens knocked the run in with a sacrifice fly.
Daryle Ward cracked a homer onto the right field deck in the third, and Lancaster was able to finish off starter Paul Phillips (4-3) in the fourth. Gallagher walked on four pitches to open the inning and went to third on Owen's one-out single to right center. Olmo Rosario cleared left fielder Aharon Eggleston with a double for a 5-2 lead, ending Phillps' night. With Derell McCall taking over, Gailen singled off Smith's glove to produce the sixth Lancaster run. Travis Denker lofted a would-be sacrifice fly to left center, but Montanez lost the ball in flight, turning it into a two-run double.
Lancaster would not score again until the eighth when Ward singled home one, and Kevin Howard blasted a three-run homer to right to cap the scoring.
The Barnstormers will host Somerset in the third game of the series on Wednesday night. Brian Grening (4-3) gets the nod for Lancaster against lefty Graham Taylor (4-2). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
