Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers have signed outfielder Greg Golson to a 2014 contract, it was announced today by manager Butch Hobson.
In addition, Lancaster has also inked infielder Jim Negrych for their 10th Anniversary Season, presented by Savemart.
Golson had a very brief stay with the Barnstormers in 2013. After being released by the Colorado Rockies, the outfielder flew from his home in Austin, TX to Lancaster on July 26. He led off the July 28 game against Southern Maryland with a home run. That would be his only contest with the Barnstormers in 2013, as the Atlanta Braves purchased his contract two days later. Golson batted .265 with seven steals in 23 games over the remainder of the season in the Braves' organization.
He was recently released by the Milwaukee Brewers' organization after signing with them during the off-season.
Golson, 28, was the first round selection of the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2004 draft. He has appeared in 40 big league games with the Phillies, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees. In his minor league career, Golson has 211 stolen bases and has batted .264 in 1043 games.
"Fans got to see Greg for that one game last year and could see he is a quality outfielder," said Hobson. "He's got speed, and he's got some pop in his bat when he needs it."
Negrych, 29, will be making his first appearance in the Atlantic League. The second baseman was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the sixth round of the 2006 draft after starring for three seasons at the University of Pittsburgh. The lefty batter captured the Class A Carolina League batting crown in 2008, hitting a whopping .370 for Lynchburg. Following five years in the Pirates' system, Negrych moved on to play in the Miami Marlins, Washington Nationals and New York Mets' organizations. The Buffalo, NY native hit .285 in 2013 for his hometown Bisons, the Class AAA affiliate of the Mets.
Over his eight-year career, Negrych has batted .296 and has an on-base percentage of .374. He was signed by the Phillies during the off-season but was recently cut from their minor league camp.
"Negrych is a (Dustin) Pedroia-like player," said Hobson. "He gets after it, gets his uniform dirty, and puts his bat on the ball."
The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their tenth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
