Barnstormers Announce 2010 Award Winners

DES MOINES - The Iowa Barnstormers are proud to announce the winners of their 2010 team awards. Six awards were handed out a private post-season party on Monday night after a vote by Barnstormer players and coaching staff. Winners are listed below.

Offensive Player of the Year: Jessie Schmidt

Defensive Player of the Year: Micah King

Teammate of the Year: Eric Anderson

Lineman of the Year: Michael Dansby

N.O.T.T.Head of the Year: Jason Simpson

2010 Team MVP: Tanner Varner

Wide Receiver Jesse Schmidt was voted as the Offensive Player of the Year. The 2010 season was his first with the Barnstormers following 3 standout years with the Quad City Steamwheelers of af2. The Buena Vista alumni led the Barnstormers in every relevant receiving category (116 receptions, 1,621 yards, 28 TD).

Linebacker Micah King was voted Defensive Player of the Year. In his second season with the Barnstormers, King developed into one of the team's top playmakers. He started all 16 games for Iowa, finishing the season with 61 tackles and a team-high 4.5 sacks.

Offensive Lineman Eric Anderson was given a special award by Barnstormers Head Coach John Gregory as he was named as the teammate of year. Gregory described Anderson as "the oil that makes the team run." Besides his great play on the field, Anderson has been frequently seen throughout Central Iowa making community appearances for the Barnstormers.

Offensive Lineman Michael Dansby was named the Barnstormers lineman of the year. Dansby has been a rock at Offensive Tackle and Tight End for the Barnstormers for the past three seasons. The 6'4" 312 lb lineman has started every single game for Iowa since the beginning of the 2008 season. Dansby is a four-year veteran of Arena Football, following a four-year standout career at Jackson State University.

The N.O.T.T.Head of the year award is given out to the Barnstormer player who provides the most consistent kick-off coverage. N.O.T.T. stands for "Nothing Outside The Ten", the Barnstormers special teams motto. This season, Defensive Back Jason Simpson is the proud recipient of the N.O.T.T.Head of the year award. The 4th year veteran from Missouri led the Barnstormers in special teams tackles.

Defensive back Tanner Varner was voted as the Barnstormers Most Valuable Player for 2010. The 4th year veteran from Northern Iowa had a remarkable season and is a strong candidate for AFL Defensive Player of the Year. Varner started all 16 games for the Barnstormers, and set a new AFL record with 146 tackles. Varner also led the team in interceptions with 8 giving him 20 total in his three seasons with
