April 10, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
LANCASTER, Pa.-The Lancaster Barnstormers continued to fill their roster today, just three days ahead of the start of spring training, with the additions of strikeout specialist Juan Ovalles and situational left-hander Coby Mavroulis.
Ovalles, 26, averaged 14 strikeouts per nine innings in the independent United League over the past two seasons. The Venezuela native went 6-2 with five saves for the Alexandria (LA) Aces in 2007 and was 4-4 with 11 saves there in the 2008 campaign.
Prior to going to the United League, Ovalles worked in the Arizona, Seattle, Chicago White Sox and Washington organizations. He made a brief stop with the Class AA Harrisburg Senators in 2006 after going 6-8 with seven saves for Class A Potomac. In his first professional season, he led the 1999 Arizona League with seven wins and a 2.40 ERA at the age of 17.
Mavroulis, 25, made two appearances for Lancaster last September and allowed three earned runs in three innings of work. Earlier in the season, the native Texan was 3-0 with a 5.18 ERA in 25 appearances for Gateway of the Frontier League.
Signing out of Texas A&M as the 21st round draft pick of the Washington Nationals in 2005, Mavroulis spent three years in the Washington system. In 2007, he pitched for current Barnstormers bench coach Tom Herr at Class A Hagerstown and was 2-1 with a 6.34 ERA.
He had been a first baseman-outfielder with the Aggies, hitting .321 in the 2004 season.
The signings give Lancaster 23 players under contract as the club prepares to assemble Monday for the start of spring training. The team's first open workouts will be Tuesday morning at the B2B Baseball and Softball Academy. Tuesday afternoon's workout at Clipper Magazine Stadium will begin at 1:30 p.m. All workouts and two exhibition games will be free and open to the public.
The Barnstormers will open the 2009 baseball season at home on Thursday, April 23 at 7:05 p.m. when they host the Newark Bears. Tickets to Opening Night and all other games in the 2009 season are on sale now and can be purchased at www.LancasterBarnstormers.com, in person at the Clipper Magazine Stadium box office or by calling 717-509-4487.
