(Portland, Maine) - Matt Barnes (3-1) fired six scoreless frames and Peter Hissey delivered a late two-run single, leading the Portland Sea Dogs (19-10) to a 4-3 win over the Reading Fightin Phils (12-17) on Monday night at Hadlock Field. Portland has won eight of their last nine. Reading dropped their seventh straight.
Barnes, who beat Reading five days ago at First Energy Stadium, scattered five hits on two walks and fanned four. The right-hander stranded five runners and held Reading 0-for-5 with runners-in-scoring position.
Reading rallied in the ninth inning, scoring a run off Keith Couch.
Derrick Mitchell lined an RBI single, before Brock Huntzinger retired Troy Hanzawa to end the game. Huntzinger converted his seventh save, in his league leading, 14th appearance of the season.
Fightin Phils' starter Greg Smith (0-1) took the loss, despite five innings of one-hit ball. The lone hit was a Tony Thomas homer in the second inning, giving Portland a 1-0 lead. Thomas, who is tied for second in the league in extra-base hits, blasted his third homer of the season.
Hissey gave Portland a 3-0 lead in the seventh, nailing a two-run single off RHP Juan Sosa. Hissey, who was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, went 1-for-3, two RBI and a stolen base.
Reading scored two unearned runs off Couch in the eighth. Sebastian Valle put the visitors on the board with a wall-ball double, Edgar Duran followed with a run-scoring single. Portland came right back, scoring a run on a wild pitch, with two outs in there half of the seventh.
Daniel Bard worked a scoreless seventh, earning his second hold of the season. The Sea Dogs had just five hits and three errors in the loss.
