Barfield, 26, was hitting .350 with Camden earlier this year before journeying to Mexico to play for the Tigres de Quintana Roo. The outfielder was drafted by the Mets in the ninth-round of the 2006 Draft out of high school and again selected in the eighth-round of the 2008 Draft out of San Jacinto. He advanced as high as Triple-A with the Athletics in 2013 and is in his first season playing in the Atlantic League.
To make room on the roster for Barfield, utility man Edwin Gomez was released.
