Barber Poles Edged by Frontenacs in Shootout
November 10, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Ottawa 67's News Release
A shorthanded Ottawa 67's team put forth a valiant effort against the Kingston Frontenacs, but just couldn't quite earn the extra point, falling 4-3 in a shootout.
Missing key veterans in Jack Beck and Adam Varga, Ottawa's crop of young players stepped up admirably, with Vinzenz Rohrer and Vsevolod Gaidamak combining for all three 67's goals. Will Cranley was, again, stellar in net, stopping 34 of 37 Kingston shots.
Despite a comparatively slower start than they've had in previous games, the Barber Poles got on the board first, 14:44 into the game. Rohrer forced a turnover deep in the Kingston zone, and earned himself a one-on-one chance against Frontenacs netminder Levi Merilainen. A slick display of hands saw the Austrian import make no mistake for his third of the season, and a 1-0 67's lead.
Kingston answered just under two minutes later, however, with a Francesco Arcuri point shot, and the two teams went into the second period tied at 1-1.
Now with their feet underneath them, the 67's began to force the issue, and who else but Rohrer would restore their one-goal lead. Gaidamak made a great feed to Brady Stonehouse in the slot, and Rohrer corralled the rebound for his second of the night.
The Fronts would again tie it later in the period, on the back of a Jordan Frasca goal, but it was Ottawa that went into the third with a lead. On the powerplay, a brilliant play by Cam Tolnai found Gaidamak in the slot, and he banged home his seventh of the season to make it 3-2 in favour of the 67's.
A powerplay goal of Kingston's own, by Chris Thibodeau, tied it late in the third, and Shane Wright scored the lone goal of the shootout, giving the Frontenacs a 4-3 win.
Game Notes:
Earning a point in the standings, the 67's now hold sole possession of first place in the OHL Eastern Conference.
This is the first time all season that the 67's have lost outside of regulation.
Vinzenz Rohrer achieved his first career multi-goal game.
Cam Tolnai has four assists in his last three games.
Up Next: The 67's wrap up their homestand on Friday night, against the Mississauga Steelheads. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm EST.
