Bandits Select Powless First Overall

Buffalo, N.Y. (October 26, 2004) – Buffalo Bandits General Manager Kurt Silcott announced today that the team has chosen midfielder Delby Powless with the first overall selection in the 2004 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft.

"We've seen Delby play a number of times at Rutgers, in the world games and most recently with the Six Nations Arrows and he continually impressed us," stated Silcott. "He's a proven goal scorer who plays tough, physical lacrosse. We expect him to step right in and make an immediate impact on our team. Adding Delby to (John) Tavares, (Mark) Steenhuis, (Jason) Crosbie and (Jonas) Derks will put a lot of pressure on any defensive group. We think that their skills will mesh very well and Delby will become an instant force in the NLL."

Powless earned first team All-ECAC and USILA honorable mention All-America honors for the second consecutive season after leading Rutgers during the 2004 season in goals (31) and tied for the team lead in points (38). Estimated to be one of the best pure goal scorers in the NCAA, Powless netted 63 goals in 29 career games for the Knights, including a career-high seven goals against Quinnipiac on March 13, 2004. During 2004, his goals per game average (2.21), was best in the ECAC. In his first season with Rutgers, Powless led the 2003 Knights in goals (32) and points (36) while starting 14 of 15 games.

"For as talented and gifted a goal scorer as Delby was at the collegiate level, I think he is even better suited for the indoor game," stated Rutgers' men's lacrosse head coach Jim Stagnitta. "There is no doubt that he will have an immediate impact because the style of play is something he's very comfortable with. He's in an excellent situation and I am very happy for him."

Prior to his matriculation in the NCAA, Powless was one of the nation's mostly highly recruited players. He earned first team All-America honors at Herkimer Community College after scoring over 80 points during the 2002 season. He was a member of the Iroquois National Team in 1999 (U-19) and 2002 (men's), where he won the bronze medal in 1999 and played for Bandits' head coach Darris Kilgour in 2002. The all-time leader in points (686), goals (332) and assists (354) for the Six Nations Arrow Jr. Lacrosse Club, Powless was a four-year captain, led the team in scoring three times and was named MVP once.
