Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, NC - The Steamers (23-10, 5-2) went deep twice in the bottom of the first inning on Michael Camporeales three-run blast and Wes Meadows two-run blast to plate five runs in the frame and hold on for an 8-6 win over the Petersburg Generals (15-20, 1-6) on Saturday at Historic Hicks Field.

Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) connected for his seventh home run of the season and took sole possession of first place in the Coastal Plain League in the home run column, picking up RBIs 23, 24 and 25 in the bottom of the first to erase a 2-0 Petersburg lead. Three batters later Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) hit home run number three of the season, a two-run shot that upped the Steamer lead to 5-2 after one complete inning.

General's starter Rocco Cundari settled down after the home run parade in the first with three consecutive scoreless innings. His General offense plated a run against Steamers pitcher Kevin Bibler in the top of the second, the third and the fourth to tie the game at 5-5.

Wigberto Naverez (Lubbock Christian University) broke the 5-5 tie when he singled home Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) for a 6-5 Steamer lead in the bottom of the sixth against Cundari. It was Nevarez's seventh RBI of the season in just his eighth game.

Bibler did not make it out of the seventh inning, in total he pitched six plus innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on 14 hits and no walks, he added two strikeouts, earning his third win of the season.

Edenton added some insurance when, in the bottom of the seventh, Nicholas Costas loaded the bases with nobody out. Righty Thomas Gill came on and after retiring the first two batters he faced he walked Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) to push home Naverez and make it 8-6 Steamers.

That was the final as Eddie Perkins (Tusculum College), Matt Duncan (Morehead State University) and Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) combined for three scoreless innings to give Bibler the win. For Egan he earned his CPL leading 12th save of the season.

Jason Kanzler extended his on-base streak to 12 games while the Steamers added to their team leading home run total; they now have 31 home runs as a team. Blaise Fernandez had a three hit day, as did Wigberto Naverez and Camporeale and Meadows had multi-RBI games for the Steamers in the win.

In three hours and twelve minutes the game had a total of 14 runs scored, 31 hits, four errors and 23 runners left on base. The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 52 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
