June 2, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
SPRINGDALE, Ark. - Northwest Arkansas Naturals first baseman Balbino Fuenmayor had a month to remember as part of the Kansas City Royals organization, and he tops it off with Texas League Player of the Month honors. Fuenmayor receives the honor after leading the Texas League in batting average (.391), runs scored (21), hits (45), extra-base hits (19), total bases (80), slugging percentage (.696) and OPS (1.114).
After earning Texas League Player of the Week honors during the final week of April, into the first week of May, Fuenmayor earned his second Player of the Week honor two weeks later from May 11 to May 17, along with fellow teammate Miguel Almonte. During month of May, Fuenmayor went hitless just three times, and logged two or more hits in 16 of the 28 games, including a stretch of six straight multi-hit games.
In addition to the excellent contact rate shown all month, Fuenmayor had his power on display as well with 8 home runs and 22 RBI, good for second among all Texas League hitters in May.
Fuenmayor joins three other former Naturals first basemen to win Texas League Player of the month including: Kila Ka'aihue (2008), Clint Robinson (2010) and Matt Fields (2013). He also joins a class consisting of two Naturals Hall of Famers, Robinson and 2015 Hall of Fame Inductee Mike Moustakas, who also earned Texas League Player of the Month in May (2010).
Fuenmayor's 66 hits, 109 total bases, .365 batting average and 1.004 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) leads all current Texas League hitters.
Northwest Arkansas begins a 6-game road trip tonight in Corpus Christi. Right-hander Miguel Almonte (4-2, 3.83) hopes to bounce back against the Hooks in this start after getting beat at Arvest Ballpark in his previous start against Corpus Christi on May 27. He will do battle with right-hander Vincent Velasquez (2-0, 1.40) in the 7:05 p.m. start.
