Frisco RoughRiders News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI (June 2, 2015) - In their first game since Joey Gallo's promotion to the Texas Rangers, the Frisco RoughRiders could not solve Thomas Lee's riddle as the Springfield Cardinals won the series opener 5-1 on Tuesday night. Nomar Mazara hit his third home run and Chad Bell retired 13 straight before exiting after six innings, but a three-run bottom of the eighth proved too much for Frisco.
The RoughRiders could not match the offensive production of their former teammate Gallo, who set a Rangers franchise record with four RBIs in his Major League debut, including a two-run homer. Mazara's blast was the lone run for Frisco, who did not have an at-bat with a runner in scoring position all game.
Bell (1-6) worked around a pair of walks in the first inning to escape trouble, but more turbulence loomed in the second. Springfield tallied four hits in the second inning, including RBI singles from Bruce Cardwell and Aldmys Diaz to put the Cardinals ahead 2-0. The southpaw settled in nicely, retiring 13 straight Cardinals to end his night.
Ross Detwiler, continuing a rehab assignment with the club, worked around two hits in the seventh before the Cards tagged him for three runs (two earned) in the eighth inning. Springfield managed four hits and two walks in the inning. Two runs scored a Mike Ohlman sacrifice fly to center field after Jake Skole committed a throwing error, allowing Nick Martini to advance home and Springfield led 4-1. Patrick Wisdom added an RBI single and suddenly the Riders trailed 5-1.
Meanwhile, Springfield starter Thomas Lee (4-3) threw a complete game gem for the Cardinals. It's the second time this season Lee has pitched into the ninth inning. With the win, Springfield (18-33) evened the season series against Frisco 2-2.
Jose Leclerc (2-1) opposes Arturo Reyes (1-2) on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. The RoughRiders return to Dr Pepper Ballpark on June 9 for a four-game homestand against San Antonio. The team will host a "Full House Night" with special uniforms depicting scenes from the classic '90s sitcom on Friday, June 12.
