Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Jordan Balazovic tossed seven shutout innings and Lewin Diaz blasted a long home run to lead the Miracle over the Daytona Tortugas, 2-0, on Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The shutout win was the ninth for the Miracle this season and their second in three games against Daytona in this series.
Balazovic (3-0) lowered his ERA to 2.25 through four starts with the Miracle. He allowed just three hits, walked one, and struck out three. He threw 89 pitches, 59 for strikes. Anthony Vizcaya pitched the final two innings to secure the shutout and his seventh save in as many opportunities. He retired all six hitters he faced and struck out two.
With the Miracle up 1-0 in the eighth, Diaz launched a towering home run over the right field foul pole. It was estimated at 423 feet and left his bat at 106 mph. The longball was his ninth this season and all have come in the last 19 games. That ties a Miracle record for home runs in a single month. Miguel Sano (April 2013) and Matthew LeCroy (August 1998) also accomplished the feat.
Fort Myers broke the scoreless tie with an unearned run in the fifth inning. Royce Lewis chopped a ball up the third base line and Daytona starting pitcher Jared Solomon threw wildly to first, allowing Aaron Whitefield to score from third. Whitefield went 2-for-3 with a walk and four stolen bases.
Solomon (0-1), just called up from Low-A Dayton, suffered the loss in his High-A debut. The right-hander tossed six innings and gave up three hits. He walked two and struck out seven.
The series concludes on Sunday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, as the Miracle look to take three out of four. Right-hander Jhoan Duran will start for the Miracle. First pitch is 6:35 p.m. ET.
