Balanced Attack Keys Jam Victory over Vipers

BAKERSFIELD - The Bakersfield Jam (8-8) defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (8-6) 128-117 Monday night at the Dignity Health Event Center. Earl Clark had a game-high 30 points and nine rebounds to lead a balanced attack, while Xavier Munford added 28 points, 11 assists, five rebounds and two blocks.

Both teams shot better than 54 percent from the field to start the game, but Rio Grande Valley held a three-point edge after one quarter of play (32-29). Trailing by as many as 12 points in the second quarter, the Jam erupted on a 24-7 run to finish the first half and took a 73-66 lead at the break.

Bakersfield led the entire second half, holding leads as big as 19 in the third and 14 in the fourth. The Vipers made a run late in the game and got within six points (122-116) at the 2:26 mark, but the Jam held their ground and secured the home victory.

The Jam as a team shot a season-high 57.6 percent from the floor, while also posting season-highs in points in the point (70) and fast break points (20).

Deonte Burton had 20 points and seven assists, while Renaldo Major tallied 12 points, four steals and two blocks. Derek Cooke Jr. recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, while Kyle Casey and Askia booker each contributed 10 points off the bench.

Joshua Smith led the Vipers with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Will Cummings added 22 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Jaron Johnson (21), Jarvis Threatt (20), and Raphiael Putney (18) also scored in double-figures.

The Bakersfield Jam are back in action on Saturday, December 26 when they take on the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on the road at 5:00 p.m. PT.
