Bakersfield Jam News Release
(Bakersfield, Calif. - December 17, 2009) - The Bakersfield Jam spent Thursday morning at Bakersfield's Hope Center, where they helped serve the community during the holiday season as part of the team's ongoing charitable efforts and the NBA D-League's Season of Giving.
"The Hope Center and the Jam make a great fit. They both have the same desire to serve and up lift the community," said Travis Ellis, son of Jam owner Stan Ellis and Hope Center board member. "The Hope Center and I are very excited to have the Jam as a partner, and look forward to doing great things in our community."
The Hope Center is a faith-based Ministry that assists low-income individuals and families who live in the community to help them move toward wholeness - physically, emotionally and spiritually. The Center distributes food, clothing and household goods to disadvantaged Bakersfield residents on a daily basis.
"We really appreciate the team being here and helping us to do things that we don't ordinarily have the manpower for," said Hope Center Director Loron Hodge. "Having the guys here is a tremendous asset, and is really more helpful than words can express. Hopefully we can also give them a way to feel helpful and involved, especially when many of them have families that they are unable to spend the holiday season with."
Players, coaches and staff members from the Jam helped the Hope Center with everything from greeting and praying with clients to organizing and handing out food and clothes donations. The team had a chance to interact not only with the Hope Center's volunteers, but also with many of the families who depend on the Hope Center to provide them with essential goods.
"One of the great things about being part of a professional sports organization is the opportunity it gives us to help the less fortunate," said Jam Head Coach Will Voigt. "The players and I realize how lucky we are to be in this position, and we take the responsibility of serving the community very seriously. Working with the Hope Center not only allowed us to lend assistance to those around us, but provided us with the unique ability to interact directly with the community members that we are helping."
