Baker Dazzles in Peoria's Third Straight Win

Peoria, IL- Trent Baker turned in seven scoreless innings Tuesday and the bullpen held on late to lead the Chiefs to a 3-2 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits at Dozer Park.

The right-hander allowed just three hits while walking one and striking out one to earn his fifth win of the year. Baker retired the final 11 batters he faced.

His counterpart, Mason Barnett turned in a quality start of his own despite taking the loss. The right-hander tossed seven innings of two-run ball, allowing four hits while walking three and fanning five.

The Chiefs scored two runs off Barnett in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nathan Church and R.J. Yeager hit singles to start the inning. Two batters later, Chris Rotondo smacked a double into left field to score both runners and make it 2-0.

Those were Rotondo's first two RBI at High-A as he has now hit safely in five of six games he has played as a Chief.

Peoria tagged on another tally in the bottom of the eighth against Anthony Simonelli. Alex Iadisernia walked and then stole second. R.J. Yeager drove him in with a single to make it 3-0.

Gustavo Rodriguez endured trouble in the ninth after facing the minimum in the eighth. He issued a pair of walks to start the frame. Juan Carlos Negret hit a single off the end of the bat to right field to make it a 3-1 game. Carter Jensen followed with a SAC fly to make it a 3-2 game. The tying run stood on first with one out. Rodriguez struck out Kale Emshoff for the second out. Shervyen Newton then doubled to extend the game.

Andrew Marrero entered with the tying run on third and go ahead run on second and Herard Gonzalez. Marrero issued a free pass which loaded the bases for Paxton Wallace. Marrero struck him out swinging to end the game.

The Chiefs are now 49-48 and 16-15 in the second half. The River Bandits dropped to 44-53 and 12-19 in the latter half.

Game Two of the series is scheduled for Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
