Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Bats continued to play good baseball Wednesday afternoon as they defeated the Norfolk Tides 6-2 at Louisville Slugger Field. Homer Bailey started for the Bats and pitched eight scoreless innings, as the visitors struggled to hit anything Bailey threw at them. There were 8,922 fans on hand to watch the game on a sunny day at the ballpark.
The Bats took an early lead in the second inning starting with a double by Danny Dorn. He was then driven in on a single by Luis Bolivar, which resulted in a close play at home plate. Dorn was able to tag home plate after he originally slid by the base and avoided a tag by Tides' catcher Chad Moeller.
Louisville continued their offensive assault in the fourth with a three-run inning. It started with a walk by Kevin Barker, followed by a single by Dorn. Darnell McDonald scored Barker on a fielder's choice to second. After another single by Bolivar, Craig Tatum drove in McDonald and Bolivar on a two-run single to left, making the score 4-0.
The Bats added an insurance run in the fifth with a RBI double by Wes Bankston, scoring Drew Stubbs.
In the seventh, Danny Dorn skied a pop fly to shortstop Carlos Rojas that dropped for a hit allowing Sutton to score, making it 6-0 Bats.
Camilo Vasquez came on for the Bats in the ninth and gave up two runs. They started off the inning with back-to-back singles and Jeff Fiorentino scored courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Melvin Dorta. Then pinch-hitter Steve Torrealba singled to center scoring Moeller, making it 6-2.
Robert Manuel came in to relieve Vasquez in the ninth with two outs, and was awarded the fifth save of the season.
Louisville dominated in all aspects of the game, including base running. Bolivar managed to steal two bases while Stubbs stole his league-leading 25th stolen base. Stubbs has now stolen ten consecutive bases without being caught. He also continued his hitting-streak to nine straight games, tying his longest streak of the season.
Bailey (7-5, 2.83) pitched eight phenomenal innings giving up zero runs on seven hits, while striking out seven and only walking one as he got the win. Since being optioned to Louisville from Cincinnati on May 24th, he has been filthy in all four starts. He has compiled a 3-0 record and has only allowed one earned run in 31.1 innings of work.
Dorn and Bolivar both had multi-hit games for Louisville. Bankston, Bolivar, McDonald, Dorn, and Tatum had RBI's for the Bats.
The Bats (35-30) finish up their series against Norfolk (38-26) Thursday night at 7:05pm at Louisville Slugger Field. Probable starters are RHP Justin Lehr (8-2, 3.93) for the Bats and RHP Chris Tillman (5-3, 2.33) for the Tides.
