Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Three scoring spurts and a hat trick by Nikita Borodayenko powered the Dubuque Fighting Saints past the Waterloo Black Hawks 8-0 on Wednesday night at Mystique Ice Center.
The Fighting Saints produced their first pair of goals in the span of one minute, 12 seconds. Samuel Sjolund hit a homerun pass the sprung Kenny Connors on a breakaway; Connors slipped in his backhander at 11:10. Dubuque's next shot also went in; goalie Emmett Croteau was crossed up when Riley Stuart's chance deflected off a defender.
At 15:15 - just over four minutes after their first tally - Dubuque made it 3-0 in the moments after a power play ended. Fast passing from Ryan Beck and Stephen Halliday left Borodayenko with a pointblank opportunity that he lofted under the crossbar.
The Saints' next grouping of goals came during the early minutes of the second period. Borodayenko cashed in on a rebound at 4:52. Sixty-two seconds later, Mikey DeAngelo added another.
Then Dubuque produced three more in a minute, 44 seconds. Michael Burchill scored from the left circle at 14:44, Borodayenko banged in a chance from the side of the net at 15:29, and Max Montes capitalized on a shorthanded rush at 16:28.
The third period passed without any further scoring. Goalie Paxton Geisel stopped four Hawks shots in the last 20 minutes and 17 for the game in his first USHL shutout.
After an off day on Thursday, the Hawks wrap up the 2021 portion of their schedule on Friday versus the Des Moines Buccaneers. The New Year's Eve game begins at 6:05 p.m., with seats available from the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office and online at tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
