Sanford Mainers News Release
When the Sanford Mainers arrived at Paul Walsh Field in New Bedford, Massachusetts, they had already beaten the New Bedford Bay Sox twice. Two blow outs in favor of the Mainers had them up 21-7 in two games with 32 hits.
That would all change tonight as the Bay Sox defeated the Moose 8-4.
Jason Ingrham made his second start for the Mainers and pitched two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the third.
Giving up a lead off double to Alex Witkus, he then got Evan King to hit a sacrifice fly to right moving Witkus to third. Witkus came in to score the game's first run on an RBI single by Zach Stone.
With the score at 1-0 in the Bay Sox favor, the Mainers exploded in the fifth inning, scoring four runs for the lead.
Nate LaPointe doubled for the inning's first base runner and switched places with Gavin Stark, scoring the Mainers first run. Cam Young followed Stark with a single that was just far enough for Stark to come around and score the go ahead run.
After a single by Will Cooper and a wild pitch, the Mainers had two runners in scoring position. Both Young and Cooper crossed the plate on a 2-RBI single off the bat of Jose Torralba. With that, Torralba now leads the Mainers with 6 RBI.
That's all the Mainers would score in the fifth inning and for the rest of the game.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth, Inghram got Zach Stone to line a pitch to right field, however, right fielder Paul Kronenfeld mishandled the line drive and Stone soon found himself on second to start the inning.
Kronenfeld was kept busy in the next two at bats, recording the first out of the inning on a fly out by Alex Black and then retrieving a ball in the corner that resulted in an RBI triple by Alex Baldock.
Seven straight hitters after Baldock reached base and five more would cross the plate. However, Baldock scored the second and last run that was credited to Mainers pitching. Six of the seven runs scored in the sixth inning were unearned due to fielding errors on Kronenfeld, Torralba, and Jordan Betts.
The Mainers were unable to regain the lead, causing them to fall to 2-6 on the season.
Mainers pitching combined for 3 walks, 6 strike outs, 10 hits allowed, and only 2 of 8 runs earned.
This is the second time this season that the Moose lose three in a row. They will have two days off until being right back in New Bedford to face the Bay Sox again on Tuesday.
First pitch will be at 6:30pm. EJ Ashworth is set to make his second start this season.
