New Jersey Jackals News Release

Quebec City, QC - On a cool and windy evening in Quebec City, the New Jersey Jackals held off the Quebec Capitales for a 9-7 victory in the opener of a three-game series at Stade Municipal.

With New Jersey leading 4-3 with two outs in the top of the eighth, Quebec called on reliever Guillaume Duguay and the first batter he faced, Jordan Newton, launched a two-run home run off the light tower in left field to extend the Jackals' lead to 6-3. On the next pitch, Chris White cleared the scoreboard in right field with his fourth homer of the season as New Jersey took a 7-3 lead.

Quebec rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth, striking southpaw Jared Locke for four runs on four hits with the aid of two walks. However, New Jersey re-gained an 8-7 edge in the top of the ninth on a Mike Jones sacrifice fly before capping the scoring on a Nick Giarraputo RBI single past the diving third baseman.

In the bottom of the ninth, Jackals' closer Jeff Gogal walked a pair of batters to put the tying run on base, but he escaped the jam to notch his 12 th save in as many chances.

In a no-decision, right-hander Shaun Ellis showed resilience for New Jersey, walking a season-high six batters but stranding nine runners on base while throwing 121 pitches over five innings. Ellis left the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings, surrendering two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in his ninth start of the season. Locke (3-1) picked up the victory while Quebec reliever Rayner Oliveros (2-2) allowed both ninth-inning runs to absorb the loss.

After the Jackals plated two runs in the first inning on a pair of RBI singles by Mike DeJesus and Myron Leslie, Quebec countered to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the second on a Jeff Helps RBI single and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Goefrey Tomlinson.

That score held until the Capitales plated a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Sebastien Boucher single to take their first lead of the day at 3-2.

The Jackals retaliated though, taking the lead back in the top of the seventh. Newton rifled a leadoff triple and scored later in the inning when Sean Smith rocketed an RBI single off Bryan Rembisz, knotting the game at three and knocking the Quebec starter from the game. Later in the frame, D'Angelo Jimenez put the Jackals ahead, 4-3, with a sacrifice fly to deep center.

Five different Jackals collected multiple hits with Newton leading the charge, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple, and two RBIs.

The Jackals and Capitales play the middle contest of their three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey right-hander Michael Moore (3-0, 5.40 ERA) squares off against Quebec righty Karl Gelinas (6-4, 3.40 ERA). Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
