Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - In the most breathtaking comeback of the season, the Gary SouthShore RailCats (35-56) scored twelve late runs, including nine in the eighth inning, to complete a four-run comeback and beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes (47-42) by a score of 16-9 to steal game one of the three game series.
Despite the Goldeyes leading 8-4 at the seventh inning stretch, Gary SouthShore would mustard a monumental comeback as Michael Woodworth would drive home the leading run on a pinch-hit triple before seven more came home including back-to-back home runs from Alec Olund and Raymond Jones.
Olund finished the evening 4-for-5, his first four-hit effort of his career, with four RBI capped off by a two-run shot in the eighth. An inning prior, Olund cut the lead to 8-7 with a two-out, two-RBI single to center.
Seven RailCats would post multi-hit efforts as Olund led the way with four hits while Hayden Schilling added three plus two RBI. With a triple, a double, three runs, and three RBI, Daniel Lingua was tremendous at the plate as well.
The win went to Matt Vonderschmidt who entered the game with two outs and two on in the top of the eighth as the RailCats trailed by one. Vonderschmidt would retire the side and set the table for a RailCats comeback for the ages.
Relief pitcher Joseph Camacho drew the loss with 0.2 innings, eight runs, six hits, and two walks.
The sixteen RailCats' runs ties a season-high while the RailCats' nineteen hits is an outright season best.
Game two between the Gary SouthShore RailCats and the Winnipeg Goldeyes is scheduled for tomorrow, August 28 at 4:10 p.m. at the Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana.
