Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Pelicans finally returned home from their 3-7 ten-game road trip and shook off their disappointment in a big way. Jared Bolden cracked a towering two-run homer in the first inning to start his three-hit, three-RBI night as the Birds rolled to an 8-3 homestand-opening victory at BB&T Coastal Field on Wednesday.

The dormant Myrtle Beach offense broke out early against Salem starter Stolmy Pimentel, who was making his first start with Salem after being rocked in 15 starts with Double-A Portland. Leury Garcia walked to lead off the first and he came around on Bolden's blast that gave the Birds a quick 2-0 lead. The home team added on as Ryan Strausborger doubled and scored on a Zach Zaneski single.

There was more than enough support for southpaw Miguel De Los Santos (2-1), who dazzled in five shutout innings. He allowed only one hit and walked four while striking out six. After a rocky opening frame in his first start in Lynchburg on July 2, Baseball America's tenth-ranked Texas prospect has twirled 13 consecutive scoreless innings in win his last two starts.

The Pelicans got one more off Pimentel (0-1) in the second when Garcia walked and came all the way around from first on a Bolden double hit to shallow right field. The Salem starter departed after only two innings in which he allowed four runs on five hits. His overall ERA for the season climbed from 9.12 to 9.46 and he drops to 0-10 between Portland and Salem.

Anatanaer Batista entered in relief for the Red Sox in the third and like Pimentel, he was greeted rudely in his first frame. The Pelicans plated a run in that inning and added three in the fifth to balloon their advantage to 8-0. Eight of the nine Myrtle Beach starters notched at least one of the team's 14 hits, led by Bolden's three. Santiago Chirino and Jared Hoying had two hits apiece, as did Zaneski, who extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

Chad Bell tossed two scoreless frames for the Birds in relief of De Los Santos before Ryan Rodebaugh came on for his home debut. In Salem's lone bright spot, Jorge Padron's three-run shot off Rodebaugh put the Red Sox on the board in the eighth and cut the lead to 8-3. Joe Ortiz picked up the final out of the eighth before Kasey Kiker closed the door with a scoreless ninth.

The series continues Thursday night as righty Wilfredo Boscan (2-6, 4.81) goes for the Birds against Salem southpaw Drake Britton (1-7, 7.26). The Pelicans will hold the most anticipated promotion of the season as they'll commemorate the release of the final Harry Potter movie with Wizards Night. The Myrtle Beach players will suit up in special uniforms that look just like Harry's robe and they'll be auctioned off after the game. Tickets for tomorrow night and all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
