Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
PORTLAND, ME - Brandon Moore mustered five innings of work to earn his first win and Mike Fisher plated a pair of runs with a pivotal fifth-inning double to send Binghamton past Portland 6-3 Monday night at Hadlock Field. The B-Mets have now won all three meetings with the Sea Dogs in 2011.
Binghamton (6-8) climbed on top out of the gate with a run in the first inning. Three of the first four hitters to the plate against starter Stephen Fife reached, filling the bases with one out. Brahiam Maldonado laced a sacrifice fly to left to put the B-Mets on top 1-0.
Moore threw up zeroes until the fourth when he ran into two-out trouble. Oscar Tejeda and Mitch Dening hit back-to-back singles with two outs. Ryan Dent evened the score with a third straight single before Moore got out of the inning.
The B-Mets responded immediately with a crooked number in the fifth. Allan Dykstra doubled to left off Fife to start the rally. Jordany Valdespin followed with an infield single and Jesus Feliciano loaded the bases with a single of his own. Fife struck out Josh Satin for the first out, but hit Eric Campbell with a pitch to force in the go-ahead run. The starter exited in favor of lefty Tommy Hottovy. Fisher greeted him rudely, however, with a ringing double off the Maine Monster in left to up the advantage to 4-1.
Portland (5-9) came back in the last of the fifth with a run off Moore. Tim Federowicz lined a double of the monster with one out. Jorge Padron converted it into an RBI with a single to left-center, cutting the margin to two.
Moore exited to the win after the fifth. He allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out three for his first win of the season. Fife was not as fortunate. The Sea Dogs starter allowed four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Binghamton added to its lead in the eighth with two runs of insurance. The first was provided by Maldonado, who hammered a solo homer over the Monster off reliever Seth Garrison. It was Maldonado's team-leading fifth home run of the season. Valdespin rounded out the B-Mets scoring with a two-out RBI single.
The Sea Dogs mustered a run in the ninth off reliever Erik Turgeon with the help of an error, but the righty nailed down the game to end the B-Mets two-game losing streak. Turgeon struck out three over two, solid innings. He was preceded by Eric Niesen and Ricky Brooks, both of whom tossed scoreless innings of relief.
Binghamton ripped 10 hits en route to the win. Fisher led the way with a 2-for-4 night and two RBI. Feliciano, Dykstra and Valdespin also had two-hit showings.
The second game of the four-game set is scheduled for 6:00 PM Tuesday evening. LHP Mark Cohoon (1-0, 0.47) will go for Binghamton opposite RHP Michael Lee (0-1, 8.10) for the Sea Dogs. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 5:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
