Game #109 - Wednesday, August 1, 2012
NYSEG Stadium - Binghamton, NY - 6:35 PM
LAST GAME: Four Binghamton Mets pitchers racked up a season-high 17 strikeouts, including eleven from Zack Wheeler, in a 3-2 win over the Harrisburg Senators last night at NYSEG Stadium. The win was Binghamton's sixth in the last eight games. Wheeler earned his tenth win, striking out a season-best 11 over 6.2 innings. The B-Mets scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth. Jefry Marte delivered an RBI double in the first, Francisco Pena brought in a run in the fourth and the B-Mets scored the game-winning run on a fielding error by second baseman Jose Lozada in the sixth. C.J. Nitkowski retired the only man he faced and Frank Francisco struck out three in a perfect eighth. Adam Kolarek earned his first Double-A save with a shutout ninth, fanning three to cap Binghamton's win.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Gonzalez Germen (6-7, 4.60) makes his first start since returning from a brief stay with the Buffalo Bisons (AAA). Germen earned the win against the Louisville Bats in his only game in the International League on July 26. The righty allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings to collect the victory. Germen lost his only previous start against Harrisburg, falling to the Senators in his Double-A debut on May 4. He allowed five runs on eight hits, but struck out nine over six innings.
RHP Kevin Pucetas (6-4, 3.65) makes his 24th appearance of the season and ninth start. The righty started the season in the bullpen, but was added to the rotation in early June. Pucetas suffered the loss in his last start against the Trenton Thunder on July 27, allowing five runs on six hits over just 3.1 innings. As a reliever, Pucetas went 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA in 15 outings. He is 4-3 as a starter with a 5.10 ERA in eight games. The South Carolina native has never faced the Binghamton Mets. Signed by the Nationals as a minor league free agent in March 2012, Pucetas was named to the Eastern League All-Star Game, but did not pitch due to a knee injury.
AND THE WHIFF: The B-Mets pitching staff collected a season-high 17 strikeouts last night against the Senators. The total was one shy of a franchise record for a nine-inning game, set against the New Haven Ravens on April 10, 1995. It was the most strikeouts for the B-Mets since they fanned 19 Senators in a 14-inning game on July 28, 2011.
JUST MISSED THE CAREER-HIGH: B-Mets starter Zack Wheeler racked up a season-high 11 strikeouts last night, one shy of his career-high set as a San Jose Giant on May 29, 2011. The righty leads the league with 117 strikeouts.
CLIMBING BACK UP: Binghamton's win, their sixth in the last eight games, put them just four games under .500. It is the closest they have been to an even record since they were 45-49 on July 16.
WRAPPING UP THE MONTH: The B-Mets went 16-13 in July. They hit .265 as a team and compiled a 4.30 ERA. Binghamton had four players that hit over .300 while playing in 25 games or more: Juan Lagares (.328), Dustin Martin(.316), Eric Campbell (.309) and Allan Dykstra (.303).
A LOOK AROUND THE LEAGUE: Every Eastern Division team won last night. The Reading Phillies, currently ahead of the B-Mets by five games, earned their sixth-straight win. Harrisburg lost their fifth consecutive game and have now lost 15 of their last 18 games. They have gone just 4-17 since the All-Star Break.
THE FINAL STRETCH: The Binghamton Mets sit fourth in the Eastern Division and are 6.5 games out of a playoff spot. There are 34 games left in the season. They will play 16 home games and 18 on the road. They will take on Eastern Division teams in 26 of the final 34 games. 16 of the last games will be against teams above them in the standings.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets conclude their seven-game homestand tomorrow night at 6:35 PM against the Senators. RHP Cory Mazzoni takes the hill for Binghamton.
