Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas (Tuesday, May 26, 2015) - After last week's 2-0 victory over the Laredo Heat in the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Aztex will travel to San Antonio for a Third Round matchup versus the reigning NASL champion San Antonio Scorpions. The winner of the match will advance to face the Houston Dynamo in the Fourth Round.
In addition to bragging rights and advancing further in the tournament, one of the supporters groups from these two teams will take home the coveted Queso Bowl, a fan-made trophy introduced to the rivalry earlier this year. Eberly's Army currently holds the Queso Bowl after the Aztex cruised to a 4-1 victory behind two goals each from both Brendan King and Guaraci in a preseason meeting with the Scorpions, the first ever Hill Country Derby on March 14th.
Guaraci, who will be suspended for the next USL game due to an accumulation of yellow cards, is eligible to play in the U.S Open Cup match Wednesday. Mozzi Gyorio has emerged as a playmaker in midfield for the Aztex, and appears to have earned more playing time with a series of solid performances from the past three games.
The Aztex will also be without Adam Bedell and Kalen Ryden, who have been called back to Aztex MLS affiliate Columbus Crew SC. Ryden has played in nine games with the Aztex this USL season, trailing only Kyle Hoffer and Lance Rozeboom in minutes played, while Bedell has appeared in three games. Sainey Touray, a member of the 2014 San Antonio Scorpions, will be out of the game due to injury.
Aztex forward Kris Tyrpak may return to U.S Open Cup play after missing the Second Round matchup due to illness. Tyrpak's 11 points in league action lead the team. Joining Tyrpak at the front of the Aztex attack is Trevin Caesar, who has quickly installed himself as a fan favorite among Aztex fans for his quick and aggressive attacking style.
The Scorpions will be looking to bounce back after a 3-0 loss to the New York Cosmos on Saturday, May 23rd. Forwards Omar Cummings and Billy Forbes highlight the San Antonio attack. Another player to watch out for is star midfielder Rafa Castillo, who scored the lone goal for the Scorpions when the two squads met in preseason action.
