Match Preview: Sacramento Republic FC vs Chula Vista FC

Sacramento Republic FC return to Bonney Field on Wednesday, May 27 to take on Chula Vista FC in the third round of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PDT. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.

In the second round of the U.S. Open Cup, Republic FC advanced by defeating Sonoma County Sol FC 4-2 on Wednesday, May 20. Republic FC scored two goals in the first 12 minutes of the match and never looked back, netting goals in the 43rd and 61st minutes.

Forward Thomas Stewart recorded the first Republic FC hat trick of 2015 scoring in the 9th, 43rd and 61st minute. These were the first three goals this season for Stewart, who led Republic FC in scoring during the 2015 season. Stewart suffered a right ankle injury in the dwindling minutes of the match on a late challenge in the middle of the field.

Republic FC midfielder Gabe Gonzalez scored in the 12th minute after the Sol keeper Arturo Ornelas saved his initial shot. This was the first Republic FC goal for Gonzalez, who scored just one goal in all competitions a season ago with Orange County Blues FC.

Chula Vista Futbol Club is a United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) member and are making their first-ever U.S. Open Cup appearance. U.S. national team pool and Liga MX players Joe Corona, Paul Arriola and Alejandro Guido all have ties to the Chula Vista region, with Guido playing for Chula Vista FC's youth program.

Chula Vista FC enter the match after defeating Arizona United SC, 3-0, on Wednesday, May 20 in Scottsdale, Ariz. to advance to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. Chula Vista FC scored in the 36th minute, and then scored again in the 48th and 71st minutes.

Chula Vista FC midfielder Alberto Diaz, who has played with the U15 U.S. men's national team, was involved in all three goals against Arizona, scoring twice and adding an assist.

Chula Vista goalkeeper Sebastian Ortiz also played well against Arizona, recording five saves on the way to a shut out. Ortiz has allowed just one goal in the club's two U.S. Open Cup matches.

The winner of Wednesday's match will travel to Avaya Stadium on Tuesday, June 16, to take on the San Jose Earthquakes.
