
Axmen Hold off Late River Riders' Comeback to Win in Thrilling Fashion

The Kingsport Axmen beat the Elizabethton River Riders by a final score of 10-9 on Monday night. The Axmen scored three runs in the first inning on a pair of RBI groundouts and a Corbin Shaw RBI single. Shaw is now on a nine-game RBI streak, leading the Appalachian League.

Kingsport scored again in the top of the second on an Ian Riley RBI single, giving the Axmen (21-9) a 4-0 lead. Riley is now on a 21 game on-base streak.
The River Riders (14-16) responded with a solo homer in the bottom of the second, cutting the Axmen lead to three.
After a four run third inning, the Axmen gained a commanding 8-1 lead. Shaw scored on a wild pitch, Petersen hit an RBI single, and Payton Allen hit a two-run single.
Allen went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two walks and two runs scored.
Elizabethton scored two in the fifth, making it an 8-3 game, but the Axmen scored one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to regain a seven-run lead at 10-3. Riley drove home a run on a sacrifice fly and Allen collected his second RBI single of the night.
Elizabethton scored five in the eighth and one in the ninth, but the comeback fell just short, as the River Riders ultimately lost by one run.
Ryan Kraft (4-0, 1.73 ERA) recorded his fourth win of the season in his last game of the year. He finished with five innings pitched, allowing 11 hits, three runs, one walk and struck out six batters.
Up next, the Axmen have two days off and then are back in action on Thursday night against the Johnson City Doughboys in Kingsport.
