Fort Worth Cats News Release

Coastal Bend scored five times in the seventh inning Tuesday night as they defeated Fort Worth 7-3 at LaGrave Field.

The loss is the second in a row for Fort Worth as their second-half record falls to 4-5.

Aviators starter Mike Smith (7-3) earned the win as he went 7 2/3 innings and allowed a run on five hits while striking out six. The win was the 67th for Smith in the Central Baseball League as he adds to his all-time record.

Coastal Bend built an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a John Ramistella run-scoring single and a Carlos Adolfo sacrifice fly. Ramistella was 2-for-4 on the night with three RBI.

The Cats cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning when Bryon Smith singled home Jim Essian. But Fort Worth left the tying run stranded at third as the fifth inning ended.

Leading 2-1 going into the seventh, Coastal Bend added to their lead with an Edwin Maldonado two-run double. Ramistella, the next batter, hit a bloop single to right that brought home two to give the Aviators a 6-1 advantage.

Ryan Weems (1-1) started and allowed just one earned run on five hits, but was saddled with the loss as the Cats never overcame the early deficit. The Cats bullpen surrendered five runs on six hits in their four innings of work.

The Cats and Aviators play Game 2 of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Shad Williams (3-5) will pitch for the Cats and he will be opposed by Jose Lopez (6-3) for Coastal Bend.
