Fernando Valley. The school visits were to promote the California Department of Health Services and the Fitness Challenge Foundation for National Public Health Week (April 3-9) event that will rally Californians to build healthier communities, eat healthy and be physically active to reduce childhood obesity.

The "A-Team" dancers and a fitness expert from Bally Total Fitness led groups of children in a "Be Fit Family" physical activity demonstration, talked about the importance of being healthy and signed autographs.

"These school visits are very important because we need to spread the word about the importance of physical fitness and proper nutrition to these kids," Shelby said. "The Kids Fitness Challenge is going to be a great event for these kids at the Rose Bowl."

Approximately 10,000 children will participate in the Kids Fitness Challenge, one of the largest kids-focused, non-competitive 5K events in State history, on April 8 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Several top State and local officials will join NFL Legend Jerry Rice, Olympic athletes, Ryan Benson (winner of NBC's The Biggest Loser) and emcee Colleen Williams to encourage and lead participants. This event will kick off Kids Fitness Challenge events in other cities across the country.

Physical inactivity and poor nutrition are one of the major public health challenges facing California and the rest of the nation. California is currently experiencing an obesity epidemic with one-third of 9- to 11-year-old children at risk for or already overweight and more than 73 percent of youth unfit.
