Austin Bruins News Release
In a rematch much different from last Saturday s 11-1 blowout, the Austin Bruins (8-1-0) edged the Brookings Blizzard (0-7-3) in a shootout 3-2 in front of 1,156 fans at Riverside Arena in Austin. The Bruins took the shootout 2-1 in six rounds.
An early Bruins penalty in the opening minutes of the first period gave Brookings the first man-advantage, and seconds into the power-play, Brandon Parker (Fairbault, MN) gave the Blizzard an early lead when his shot from the point deflected off of Austin goaltender Nick Lehr s (Roseville, MN) stick and in. The Bruins outshot the Blizzard 12-5, but were unable to convert on two first period power-plays and trailed 1-0 going into the break.
The Blizzard came out in the second and added to their lead when newcomer Russ Jordan (Aurora, IL) found a lose puck in the crease and tapped it in to the net for his third goal of the season. Trailing 2-0 and on the penalty-kill, Austin s tallied their first short-handed goal of the season when Drew Anderson (Rochester, MN) cleaned up a rebound from an Austin Nelson (Hastings, MN) shot.
Late in the middle period, Jay Dickman (Shoreview, MN) appeared to score the equalizer on a breakaway, but the goal was waved off because Blizzard goalie Drew Weigman (Arnold, MD) kicked the post off its peg before the puck went in. Instead of scoring the first time around, Dickman was issued a penalty shot and scored again to tie the game at 2-2 after two periods.
Neither team was able to notch the game-winner in the third period or overtime, but the Bruins squeaked out the win in the sixth round of the shootout when Brian Bachnak (Brownstown, MI) beat Weigman. Lehr made 25 saves in his seventh win of the season, including eight saves in overtime and five in the shootout.
Next weekend, the Bruins travel to Aberdeen for two games against the Wings Friday and Saturday night. Both games can be seen on fasthockey.com, while Saturday s game will be aired on 1480 KAUS in Austin.
