Austin FC News Release
Austin, TEXAS - Austin FC announced today the Club agreed to a new multi-year contract with midfielder and Designated Player Sebastián Driussi. Driussi's new deal includes three (3) guaranteed years through the end of the 2025 season, with an option for the 2026 season.
"I'm delighted to sign a new contract with Austin FC," said Driussi. "This Club and community have made Austin feel like home for my family and me. I have big ambitions here both personally and for the team, and I'm excited to work with my teammates, Josh, and the staff to achieve them."
Since making his Austin FC debut in August 2021, Driussi has scored 30 goals and tallied 12 assists in 54 total MLS appearances. His 22 goals and 29 goal contributions during the 2022 regular season ranked second and third most in the league, respectively. He added three (3) goals in three (3) MLS Cup Playoff matches, leading the Verde & Black to the Western Conference Final.
"Sebastián is one of the most gifted and talented players in Major League Soccer," said Austin FC Head Coach Josh Wolff. "He's a top-quality player and leader in our locker room. This contract extension is well-deserved, and we're thrilled that he's decided to make Austin his home for the foreseeable future."
The Argentine collected several accolades for his performance in 2022. Driussi finished second in Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player voting, was voted to the MLS Best XI and the MLS All-Star Team, was named MLS Player of the Month twice and to the MLS Team of the Week 11 times. Austin FC's goals-per-game average has more than doubled since Driussi's Club debut, rising from 0.81 to 1.67.
"Sebastián's impressive performances throughout 2022 clearly established him as one of the best players in Major League Soccer," said Austin FC Interim Sporting Director Sean Rubio. "It's fantastic to have reached agreement on a new contract and we can't wait to see him continue to shine as a member of Austin FC."
Before joining Austin, Driussi began his professional career in 2013 as a 17-year-old with River Plate in his native Argentina. Driussi scored 31 goals in four (4) seasons with River Plate and moved to Zenit St. Petersburg of the Russian Premier League in 2017. With Zenit, Driussi scored 25 goals in 119 appearances, helping the team win three (3) consecutive domestic league titles and qualify for the UEFA Champions League for three (3) consecutive seasons from 2019-2021.
Austin FC will host a press conference with Driussi, Wolff, and Rubio at Q2 Stadium today, February 14 at 1 p.m. CT. Media are invited to attend by RSVPing to Cameron Koubek (contact information above). The press conference will also be live streamed on Austin FC's Twitter and YouTube.
