Austin FC, Club Captain Alex Ring Agree to New Contract

Austin, TEXAS - Austin FC announced on Monday that the Club agreed to a new contract with midfielder and Club Captain Alex Ring. The deal includes two (2) guaranteed years in 2022 and 2023 with two (2) options in 2024 and 2025, respectively. Per Club policy, financial terms of the deal will not be publicized.

"My family and I are delighted to commit our future to such a great Club, welcoming city, and amazing fans," said Ring. "Austin FC is building something special, and I can't wait to get back out under the Verde lights at Q2 Stadium."

During the 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, the midfielder made 31 appearances, all of which were starts. Ring scored four (4) goals and tallied three (3) assists in that span, and led all Austin FC players in multiple defensive categories, including tackles (43), duels (301), and interceptions (52), with his interceptions total ranking third-most among all MLS midfielders.

"Alex has consistently been one of the best at his position in Major League Soccer over the past few seasons," said Austin FC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna. "He is a terrific player with great character and leadership skills, and we are thrilled to keep him and his family in Austin as we continue to grow and improve."

A native of Helsinki, Finland, Ring enters the 2022 season with five (5) years of MLS experience. A constant presence on the pitch throughout the Verde & Black's inaugural season, his 2,708 minutes played in 2021 ranked first among all Austin FC outfield players.

Prior to joining Austin FC, Ring played four (4) seasons with New York City FC, making 113 appearances with the club. Ring has made 44 appearances for Finland at the senior international level and scored two (2) goals for his country.
