
Austin Bold FC's Edson Braafheid Becomes Eligible for 2019 Season

AUSTIN, TX Austin Bold FC is excited to announce Edson Braafheid's eligibility to play in the 2019 USL Championship season after the approval of his Employment Authorization and Advanced Parole Document by the Department of Homeland Security. Braafheid has trained and traveled with The Bold since his initial signing announcement. His first eligible match is Saturday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m. CT against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Bold Stadium
As a Netherlands National Team player, Braafheid participated in the 2010 World Cup final against Spain. He combined 26 matches for the Oranje in both the senior and Under-21 teams. The Royal Dutch Football Association selected Braafheid for the 2008 Summer Olympics squad and 2006 UEFA U-21 Championship winning team.
Braafheid joined Austin Bold FC from FC Utrecht before the start of the 2019 USL Championship season. He made 94 appearances during two stints for the Eredivisie club, which he began his professional playing career in 2003. Braafheid moved to fellow Eredivisie club FC Twente on a free transfer in 2007 appearing in 76 matches. In 2009, he signed with German powerhouse Bayern Munich and spent a year on loan with Scottish Premier League club Celtic. From 2011 to 2014, Braafheid played for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim helping the club reach the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal. Braafheid returned to his boyhood club FC Utrecht in 2016 after a two-year run with Lazio of the Italian Serie A.
