Portland Sea Dogs News Release
SEA DOGS DROP SERIES TO ERIE - The Portland Sea Dogs fell to the Erie SeaWolves on Sunday afternoon, 6-4. With the the loss, the Sea Dogs dropped the series 4-2 to Erie. The SeaWolves brought in the first run in the top of the second inning against Portland starter Brett Kennedy. Wenceel Perez led off the with a homer. It was his fifth homer of the year and gave Erie a 1-0 lead. Portland played copycat in the bottom of the second against Erie starter Ty Madden. Stephen Scott blasted a solo homer to lead off the inning. It was the sixth time Scott has gone deep this season and it tied the score at 1-1. Erie plated two more runs in the top of the fourth against Portland reliever Dylan Spacke. With one out, Dane Myers tripled to center. Gage Workman and Jon Rossoff both walked, loading the bases. Daniel Cabrera singled down the right-field line, scoring Myers and Workman, putting the SeaWolves in the lead 3-1. The Sea Dogs fought back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Izzy Wilson led off with his seventh homer of the season, making it a 3-2 game. Wil Dalton grounded into a fielder's choice and Wilyer Abreu walked, putting runners on first and second. Christian Koss knocked in Dalton with a base hit to left, tying the game, 3-3. In the next at-bat, a fielding error by Erie shortstop Andrew Navigato, scoring Abreu and gave the Sea Dogs a 4-3 lead. Two runs came around to score in the top of the seventh, giving Erie the lead back. Quincy Nieporte led off with a home run, tying the game 4-4. Myers singled and stole second base. Dillon Dingler drove him in with a double to left, giving Erie the lead 5-4.
TOP OF THE DIVISION - With the victory over the SeaWolves last night, the Portland Sea Dogs are back in first place in the Northeast Division of the Eastern League. The Hartford Yard Goats lost last night, their second-straight loss, falling into second place 0.5 games behind the Sea Dogs. The Bowie Baysox remain in first place in the Southwest Division, 3.0 games ahead of the second place Erie SeaWolves.
DEARDEN ON A STREAK - Tyler Dearden is currently riding a twelve-game on base streak. In his 12 games, he is hitting .375 with seven runs and four doubles. He also blasted two homers and has driven home five runs. During the streak, Dearden has drawn eight walks and struck out 12 times.
SANTOS IS PROMOTED - Prior to tonight's game, the Boston Red Sox have promoted RHP Victor Santos to Triple-A Worcester. This season, Santos was 7-8 with a 4.97 ERA through 19 games (16 starts). He tossed 101.1 innings allowing 62 runs (56 earned) on 103 hits while walking 20 and striking out 79.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - August 9, 2006 - The Sea Dogs ended a 10-game losing streak with a 5-4, walk-off victory over the Harrisburg Senators at Hadlock Field. Jeremy West picked up an infield hit with the bases loaded and nobody out, scoring Jacoby Ellsbury for the winning run.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Michael Wacha will start tonight for the Sea Dogs in a Major League rehab appearance. He is currently 6-1 with a 2.69 ERA through 13 games with the Boston Red Sox. This season is his 11th professional season, and first with Boston. Wacha made his Major League debut on 5/30/13 vs. Kansas City, less than a year after being selected in the 1st round (19th overall) of the 2012 June Draft (6/4/12). He earned his lone All-Star selection in 2015 with the St. Louis Cardinals and was 17-7 with a 3.38 ERA (68 ER/181.1 IP) in 30 starts.
