Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack returned home on Wednesday night to meet the Barrie Colts in the 5th edition of the Battle of Highway 26 this season. The Colts lead the season series 3-1 coming into tonight's tilt, winning the last three meetings after Owen Sound won the first game 10-0. Prior to puck drop, Aidan Dudas and Alan Letang were honoured for their gold medals at the 2020 World Juniors with Team Canada. Mack Guzda received the start for the Attack while Jet Greaves took his place in the Colts crease. Owen Sound's top line was shuffled going into the game, with Barret Kirwin taking the pivot position flanked by Matthew Struthers and Dudas.
Owen Sound had the first big chance of the game, opening the period with a great two on one chance that Greaves turned away. Soon after, the Colts went to the penalty box after Adam McMaster was hit with an illegal check to the head. The Attack couldn't convert on the man advantage and it would end prematurely with the home team taking their own trip to the sin bin. Owen Sound was able to kill off the penalty, but Barrie would strike first. Evan Vierling pounced on a turnover in the Attack zone and fired the puck past Guzda for his 3rd of the season. The lead wouldn't last long, less than five minutes later Brady Lyle converted on the power play to tie the game up with his 11th of the season. With under three minutes left in the frame, Sergey Popov pounced on a Kaleb Pearson rebound and roofed it past Greaves for the 2-1 advantage. After 20, Owen Sound led 2-1 on the scoreboard and 22-10 on the shot clock.
Kaleb Lawrence opened the second period with his third of the season after taking advantage of a fortuitous bounce off the end boards at the Bayshore. The Attack found themselves up 3-1 before Barrie started putting on the pressure. The Colts earned a man advantage and started piling up the shots on Guzda, but he was up to the task and turned them away to keep the Attack lead to two goals. The Bears put up 17 more shots in the second, but only one could get past Greaves. Late in the period, Mark Woolley was ejected from the game for a hit from behind on Nicholas Porco. After two periods, Owen Sound led 3-1 while outshooting Barrie 39-25.
Over four minutes remained on the major penalty as play resumed for the third but the Owen Sound penalty kill remained effective. With just under two minutes left in the major, the Attack were called for another minor and would face a 5 on 3. Great individual plays from Barret Kirwin and Aidan Dudas helped maintain the two goal lead while Dudas was hooked on a potential breakaway to end the 5 on 3. It was Matt Philip that iced the game with just over twelve minutes to play in the period. After blocking a shot, Philip went the other way with a tremendous individual effort where he eventually beat Greaves for his 17th of the season. Owen Sound continued to pile up the shots on their way to the win, recording sixty six attempts on the Barrie net. The Colts put 30 on Mack Guzda as the Attack won 4-1.
Guzda was named the Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player as well as third star of the game. Jet Greaves earned 2nd star honours with his 62 saves while Matt Philip earned first star with his goal and defensive play.
The Owen Sound head to Guelph on Friday night to meet the Storm at 7:30 p.m. The game can be seen on Rogers Channel 53, heard on 560 CFOS Bear Radio and streamed at OHLLive.com. The Attack return home Saturday night to meet the Generals. Tickets are available online and at the MacVicar & McComb Sutton Realty Attack Box Office.
